Companion dogs are very popular and Maltese Puppies are one of the dog breeds that top in terms of regard. The Maltese breed has been around for a very long time. It is thought to have originated in Malta. Often referred to as "Ye ancient dogge of Malta", this breed has enjoyed aristocrat status in the canine world for over 26 centuries.
Maltese dogs are small. The American Kennel Club put the ideal weight for an adult to be around 4-6 pounds. They are ideal for people to live in apartments or homes with small yards. This type of dog breed is also Hypoallergenic, meaning people with sensitivity to dog hair and dander may not be allergic to the Maltese. Because hair is not shed, daily brushing and grooming of the hair is often required to prevent matting. Other examples of hypoallergenic dogs are the Shih Tzu and the Portuguese Water Dog.
The pictures we see of the dog are those that show them usually sporting long shiny white coats. The color preferred is pure white, although cream or light yellow coloration in the ears are acceptable. Lots of owners like pinning ribbons to show off the dog's black eyes but others prefer to give their dogs a puppy cut where the hair is cut close to the skin, making them easier to clean and groom.
Maltese dogs and puppies are playful and friendly. They thrive on attention and are very energetic. Even older dogs are still enthusiastic and still like being cuddled and played with. Even though this breed type is included in the list of Teacup breeds, they make good guard dogs because of their reputation as yappers. Teacup dogs are referred as such because of their size. They were also referred to as toy dogs or lapdogs.
To make sure that your Maltese is a pedigree, make sure you buy one for sale from a reputable pet store. However, there are also free dogs available through adoption. Most Maltese owners observe that this dog breed like to jump into puddles and most of them are a little bit harder to housetrain. Like most other dogs, the Maltese will need a walk everyday. Play will take care most of their exercising needs but a walk will still be needed to take care of their primal instincts.
